Information
The 13C breath test is a safe and non-invasive test used to detect the presence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria in the stomach. This bacterium is common in humans and may be associated with inflammation of the stomach lining, the formation of ulcers, and even the development of stomach cancer.
During the test, the patient drinks a solution containing a small amount of 13C-labeled urea. If H. pylori is present in the stomach, the bacteria break down this substance and release carbon dioxide (CO₂), which enters the bloodstream and is then exhaled. Breath samples are analyzed to detect the presence of labeled CO₂. If it is detected, the test yields a positive result for H. pylori infection.
The test is quick and convenient, usually taking about 30 minutes, and the patient does not experience any discomfort during the procedure.
How to prepare for the test?
- Medications: Certain medications (such as antibiotics and proton pump inhibitors) must be discontinued 4 weeks before the test, as they can affect the accuracy of the results.
- Diet: Do not eat or drink (except for plain water) for 6–8 hours before the test. It is recommended to avoid alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods.
- Other restrictions: Do not smoke for at least 6–8 hours before the examination.
